Newton Running's Wendy Lee with a Trickle Up participant during a trip to Guatemala in 2009 (more pictures below)
About two years ago, we got a call from a woman named Wendy Lee, who introduced herself as being with a small start-up running shoe company called Newton Running. They had read about Trickle Up on our website and wanted to help support us with a contribution of $1 for every pair of shoes they sold.
Getting a call like that is wonderful, of course, but I silently wondered how a little company in Boulder, Colorado, that was being started by an inventor and a real estate developer could ever take on giants like Nike, Adidas and Puma. So I’m happy to share this great feature about Newton from the Huffington Post, please click here.
I hope you’ll take a moment to read this article, which tells the inspiring story of Newton’s ability to innovate and succeed, its warm and humble corporate culture and their remarkable commitment to using some of their profits to help those in need. Most start-ups dedicate all of their capital and profits to growing their business, figuring that later they might have the funds to give back to society. Newton is a different kind of company, and from day one committed to supporting causes they believed in, including Trickle Up.
Since that first phone call, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the Newton team in Boulder and going with Wendy and Donna Lee, daughter and wife of co-founder Jerry Lee, to see Trickle Up’s work in Guatemala. They have been great friends and partners to Trickle Up in our work. And, while I’m not a runner, several members of our board are, and they rave about the Newton running experience.
Newton Running’s Wendy Lee and her mom Donna joined a trip to Guatemala in 2009 to see Trickle Up in action in the field. Here are some photos from their trip:
